A grand red brick building stands before you. This is the Rohrmeisterei in Schwerte. Its history stretches back to 1890. Then it served as a pumping station. It provided Dortmund and Horde with drinking water. The Ruhr River nearby provided ample water. This water was pumped over the Ardey ridge.

Initially a seven-bay hall it expanded in 1896. Three more bays were added. The final dimensions are impressive 70.24 meters long and 24.32 meters wide. The maximum height reaches 11.45 meters. The building is a testament to the era’s industrial might. Its brickwork and cast-iron windows are remarkable.

By the 1920s newer more efficient pumping stations replaced it. The Rohrmeisterei then served a different purpose. It became a maintenance facility for the Dortmund city waterworks’ pipe network. This is how it got its name Rohrmeisterei meaning pipe master’s workshop. It’s a nickname rather than the official name. The building continued to change uses over time. It served as a riding hall a warehouse even a garage. After the war the large water basins were filled with rubble.

In 1976 the city of Schwerte took ownership. The building sat empty. Ideas for its future were debated. Demolition or renovation were considered. Eventually in 1999 a citizens’ initiative took over. The BürgerStiftung Rohrmeisterei Schwerte was born. This group of volunteers has transformed the Rohrmeisterei. They restored it into the thriving cultural center we see today.

Today it hosts approximately 250 events annually. The Rohrmeisterei stands as a shining example. It is a unique monument to industrial heritage successfully repurposed. It’s a testament to community involvement and vision. The Rohrmeisterei a cultural gem and a place of good taste. It is a beloved community gathering place. It seamlessly blends culture nature and history. Enjoy your visit to this extraordinary place.
