“Bringing Broadway to Rockaway.” It’s more than just a motto, it’s the driving force behind the Rockaway Theatre Company. Founded in 1997, the Rockaway Theatre Company faced a setback when their initial venue closed that same year.

But the resilient group found a new home at Fort Tilden. They partnered with Gateway National Recreation Area. Their first performance at Fort Tilden was on October 31, 1997 in Building T-149. This space had a raised stage, limited wing space and a large seating area.

The Rockaway Theatre Company then moved to the Post Theatre in Building T-4. This building was once a movie theatre on the Fort Tilden Army Base. The Rockaway Theatre Company entered into an agreement. They would restore and renovate the building in exchange for permission to perform live theatre.

Over the next nineteen years, the Rockaway Theatre Company transformed the Post Theatre. They refurbished seats and extended the stage. Modern lighting and sound systems were installed. The dressing rooms and restrooms were renovated. They even replaced the roof. These renovations had to be done twice after Super-storm Sandy hit in 2012.

All these improvements were funded by ticket sales, fundraising, and grants. Dedicated volunteers performed most of the work. The Rockaway Theatre Company saved a lot on labor costs this way.

The first production at the Post Theatre opened in June 1998. In the first two seasons, there was no running water, working bathrooms, heat, or A/C. Audience members endured some inconveniences.

The Rockaway Theatre Company has earned a reputation for high-quality theatre. People travel from all over to see their performances. Some come from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Long Island. Others come from Connecticut, Westchester County, and all five boroughs of New York City.

The Rockaway Theatre Company offers a first-rate educational program. They have a Young People’s Theatre Workshop for students aged 8 to 18. The workshop culminates in a Broadway-quality musical production on the main stage.

Adult seminars cover a wide range of topics. These include dance, acting, stage management, and costume design. Professionals and licensed teachers lead the workshops. Some have appeared on Broadway and television.

The Rockaway Theatre Company strives to create a superior year-round theatrical season. They are dedicated to expanding educational programs and increasing their supporters. The Rockaway Theatre Company provides low cost, high-quality theatrical productions for the public. It offers a chance to experience live theater for many people. The performers and theatre-makers reflect the diversity of the city. The Rockaway Theatre Company is an artistic home for many, onstage, backstage and in the audience.
