Ever wondered what a true community art incubator feels like? Welcome to Rock Rose Gallery.

Rock Rose Gallery isn’t just a gallery. It’s a vibrant hub on North Figueroa Street a place where art and community intertwine. Opened in 2000 by Rosamaria Marquez it’s been a cornerstone of Highland Park. It’s more than just a space to display art. It’s a place where stories unfold.

Rosamaria a first-generation Chicana visual and performing artist has poured her heart and soul into Rock Rose. She’s a puppeteer who appeared on the Emmy-nominated children’s show “Angie’s Garage”. She even uses the gallery to continue her lifelong dedication to art culture and community engagement. One half of Rock Rose showcases vintage folk art from Mexico and Central America. She acquired this collection from The Folk Tree after its owner passed away. The other half is a dynamic performance space. It has hosted everything from Sunday jazz nights to children’s jewelry-making workshops. Author book signings have also taken place there.

Rock Rose has played a vital role in the community. It even served as a meeting place for the Highland Park Neighborhood Council in the early 2000s. This is where Rosamaria met her friend and collaborator Carmela Gomes. Gomes a retired teacher praises Rosamaria’s generosity and commitment. She says Rosamaria’s work is a powerful example of art in action.

Rock Rose Gallery’s impact extends beyond its walls. Six years ago Rosamaria started an internship program. High school students work alongside professional artists. They contribute to projects like the Grand Park Día de los Muertos ofrendas and Joe Bravo’s “Water is Life” mural. These experiences offer invaluable lessons in professionalism organization and patience.

The interns themselves highlight the profound impact of their time at Rock Rose. They share experiences that extend far beyond art. They’ve gained life skills and new perspectives. They’ve discovered hidden talents and passions.

Though Rock Rose has faced challenges it continues to be a beacon of creativity and community. It’s a place where art blossoms and stories are shared. It’s a place where Los Angeles’ vibrant culture thrives. It’s a place you should experience. It’s a place where community truly matters. Rock Rose Gallery. More than just a gallery. A testament to the power of art.
