Rock Road Library

Opened in 1936, Rock Road Library stands before you as a testament to community spirit and the enduring power of knowledge. This library wasn’t simply erected. It emerged from a desire to create an “intellectual home” for the people of Cherry Hinton, as Councillor Swift eloquently put it during the opening ceremony. This building embodies that vision. It has served as a beacon of learning and connection for generations. Rock Road Library’s story begins in 1934. The Borough Council recognized the growing need for library services in the area. They initiated a temporary school branch library at Morley Memorial School. This temporary measure demonstrated the community’s thirst for knowledge. It paved the way for a dedicated library building. Rock Road Library was designed by the Borough Engineer and Surveyor, George William Teasdale. Remarkably, the building remains largely unchanged from its original design. The 1990s saw community fundraising efforts. These efforts led to the addition of much-needed toilets for library users. In 2014, the library underwent some renovations. Crittall-style doors were installed, providing access to the garden. The reception desk and shelving were reorganized. A community room was created in the former children’s library space. The children’s library was relocated to the back of the building. In its inaugural year, Rock Road Library circulated an impressive 109,000 books. This matched the circulation of Mill Road Library, located about a mile away. Today, annual borrowings hover around 90,000, reflecting the evolving needs of library users. Rock Road Library has weathered periods of service cuts and even threats of closure. However, it has persevered thanks to the dedication of the local community. In 2009, the Friends of Rock Road Library formed. They initially focused on revitalizing the neglected library garden. When the library faced closure, the group’s mission expanded. Now, they work tirelessly with the County Council to ensure the library’s continued vitality. The Friends even secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant in 2014. This grant funded a project exploring the community’s involvement in World War I. The project culminated in a memory quilt. This quilt is now on permanent display in the community room. Rock Road Library has faced challenges and seen changes. However, it stands as more than just a building. It is a symbol of the community’s commitment to learning, connection, and the power of shared stories. Rock Road Library stands as a testament to the importance of libraries as vital community hubs.
