“Psst, wanna see some real Vegas locals?” That’s what the desert whispers about Rock Lizards.
These aren’t your average Elvis impersonators. Rock Lizards are the real deal. These creatures have been soaking up the Nevada sun for ages.
Let’s talk lizards. Nevada is home to a surprising variety. We have everything from the Great Basin Collared Lizard to the Western Banded Gecko. You might even spot a Gila Monster. But don’t get too close!
The Northern Sagebrush Lizard loves Red Rock Canyon. It’s a small lizard. They are usually gray or tan. They eat insects and spiders. You can find them hiding under shrubs. Sometimes they hang out in rodent burrows.
The Valley of Fire is another great place to spot lizards. One lucky photographer even replaced some lost chuckwalla photos there. He found them all over the place!
Chuckwallas have a cool trick. They run into crevices when scared. Then they gulp air to wedge themselves in. This makes it hard for predators to pull them out. They don’t get invited to many parties.
Desert iguanas also call Nevada home. One was even found sharing a cave with black widow spiders. Yikes!
You might see a horned lizard. People used to call them “horned toads” because of their flat bodies. But they aren’t related to toads. That flat body makes them hard to swallow.
Keep an eye out for the side-blotched lizard. The dark blotch behind its leg isn’t always easy to see.
Remember Rock Lizards when you think of Vegas. They are a reminder of the wild side of Nevada. They have adapted to the desert. These amazing reptiles are part of what makes this landscape so special. So next time you are out here keep your eyes peeled for the real rockstars of Nevada.
