Rock Gun Battery

High on the Rock of Gibraltar, overlooking Green’s Lodge Battery, sits the Rock Gun Battery. It’s a place where the echoes of history whisper tales of ingenuity and resilience. The Rock Gun Battery isn’t just a collection of old stones and rusted metal. It’s a testament to the strategic brilliance of the British during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. Imagine the scene in October 1779. The siege raged, and the British at Green’s Lodge Battery were having such success that they decided to push their advantage. Their goal? To establish a battery even higher up the Rock, at the very summit of Middle Hill. Construction began on a road to the summit, but the gunners, eager to unleash their firepower, grew impatient. They weren’t about to wait for the road’s completion. So they took matters into their own hands, quite literally. Using a block and tackle system, these determined men dragged a heavy 24-pounder gun up the steep face of the Rock. Days of back-breaking labor culminated in victory. On October 12, 1779, the platform was finished, the gun mounted on its traversing carriage, and the Rock Gun Battery was born. The next day, the gun roared to life, raining fire down upon the Spanish camp below. The Rock Gun Battery’s strategic location allowed the gunners to observe enemy movements and disrupt their operations. The battery played a key role in the Great Siege, its elevated position giving the British a crucial edge. The Rock Gun Battery wasn’t just a wartime marvel. It continued to serve Gibraltar throughout history. It was rebuilt during World War II, a platform for anti-aircraft guns added to its defenses. Later, in the mid-20th century, it was repurposed as a radio transmission site. Though the radio farm closed in 2005, and much of Middle Hill was transferred to the Government of Gibraltar, the summit, the site of the Rock Gun Battery itself, remains under the authority of the Ministry of Defence. Even today, it serves as a potential posting for the Royal Air Force Aerial Erector School. Standing here now, at the Rock Gun Battery, try to imagine the scene. The determined efforts of those gunners, hauling their weapon up the Rock’s unforgiving slopes. The thunder of the cannon, echoing across the landscape.
