“Ayudame Roberto” Help me. These words echoed in sculptor Maritza Hernandez’s mind as she painstakingly crafted the Roberto Clemente Statue. Here we stand before it in Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx. This magnificent bronze sculpture isn’t just a statue. It’s a testament to a legendary baseball player and humanitarian.
The statue depicts Clemente’s final career moment. He doffs his helmet after hitting his 3000th hit. It stands proudly on a four-foot base. Inscribed on the base is one of Clemente’s powerful quotes: “Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t then you are wasting your time on Earth.” This profound message encapsulates Clemente’s life. He was more than just a baseball superstar.
Clemente was a beacon for the large Puerto Rican community in New York City. His signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers played a role in his legacy here. He was also the first Latin American ever elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. After his tragic death in 1972 Harlem River State Park was renamed in his honor becoming Roberto Clemente State Park.
This statue unveiled in 2013 marks the first time a Puerto Rican has been so honored in New York City. Goya Foods sponsored the project. Their president Bob Unanue a baseball fan saw it as a fitting tribute. Cristobal Colon a close friend of Clemente and Goya executive in Puerto Rico helped to make this happen. Clemente’s sons Luis and Roberto Jr. attended the unveiling. Roberto Jr. spoke about the statue’s importance for children using the park. It serves as a reminder of Clemente’s extraordinary life.
