This 25-acre park opened in 1973 as Harlem River State Park. It was the first New York state park in an urban setting. In 1974, it was renamed to honor Roberto Clemente. He was the first Latino-American inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Clemente tragically died in a plane crash. He was delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua in 1972.
