“Imagine hand-carved mantels and original leaded glass.” That gives you an idea of the elegance once found in a Philadelphia landmark. Though, it’s not exactly here at the Robert N.C. Nix, Sr. Federal Building. Let me tell you about The Touraine.

The Touraine stands as a testament to Philadelphia’s rich architectural history. It blends classic elegance with modern comfort. Originally constructed in 1917, The Touraine was designed by Frederick Webber.

The Touraine first served as a grand hotel. It offered sophisticated urban living in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. The building spans thirteen stories. In 1983, it was converted into luxury apartments.

The building’s transformation respected its past. Original details were carefully maintained. These details include hand-carved mantels and hardwood oak floors. Also original leaded glass and French doors. Wide hallways add to the timeless atmosphere. The lobby features handmade millwork. There are places to sit and read from the library.

The Penthouse at the Touraine offers a contrast. It was constructed in the seventies. It was a personal residence for the Touraine’s owner. The design had a Southwestern theme. This clashed with the building’s historic nature. Current owners sought a renovation. They desired a cool, classic, and contemporary space. They wanted to take advantage of the skyline views. The redesign incorporated exposed structural elements. This created visual interest while keeping the space light and airy.

The first floor was redesigned. This maximized living areas. The wrap-around terrace offered picturesque skyline views. An entire second floor was added. The result is a 3200-square-foot penthouse. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It also boasts 1900 square feet of outdoor space.

The Touraine was added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on January 7 1982. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

So, while we admire the Robert N.C. Nix, Sr. Federal Building, remember The Touraine. It stands as a Philadelphia landmark. It blends classic elegance with modern comfort. It maintains its historic feel with original moldings. Also leaded glass, oak floors, hand-carved mantels, and classic gargoyles.
