Robert Clive’s most famous victory was the Battle of Plassey in 1757. This victory laid the foundation for British rule in Bengal. He secured the company’s trade interests. He also amassed a personal fortune.

Clive’s actions were not without controversy. His role in the Bengal Famine of 1770 is heavily criticized. Some historians blame his economic policies for exacerbating the famine. It killed millions.

His life ended in England in 1774. He died at the age of 49. The circumstances surrounding his death are debated. Some say it was suicide.
