“Mind the light, Kate.” These words, uttered by Captain John Walker to his wife Katherine in 1890, became synonymous with the Robbins Reef Light. They echo the spirit of this beacon, standing steadfastly between Staten Island and the Statue of Liberty. Robbins Reef Light isn’t just a navigational aid. It’s a symbol of resilience, a testament to a woman’s strength, and a unique piece of New York Harbor’s history. The Robbins Reef Light, originally constructed in 1839 from granite, was reborn in 1883 as a cast-iron “sparkplug” lighthouse. Its conical shape, brown on the lower half and white on the upper, with a black lantern, has guided countless vessels through the often-treacherous waters. Its light, flashing green every six seconds, is a comforting rhythm in the bustling harbor. The reef itself, known initially as Robyn’s Rift, was a haven for seals, giving the location its Dutch-derived name. It sits near the Kill van Kull, a vital waterway connecting New York Bay to Newark Bay, and a crucial artery for the Port of New York and New Jersey. After her husband’s death, Katherine Walker, known as Kate, became the keeper of Robbins Reef Light. For thirty-three years, she was the heart and soul of this beacon. Kate not only maintained the light, meticulously cleaning its fourth-order Fresnel lens, ensuring its 7-nautical-mile reach, but she also raised her family within its walls. The lighthouse became a home, with six levels housing everything from a cistern in the cellar to bedrooms on the upper floors, culminating in the lantern room with its panoramic view. Kate’s life at Robbins Reef Light was far from easy. She rowed her children to school in Bayonne and faced the constant threat of the unpredictable waters. She rescued over fifty people, a testament to her bravery and skill. She battled storms, tended to a temperamental foghorn, and meticulously kept records, all while ensuring the light continued to shine. The Robbins Reef Light isn’t just a structure; it’s a vessel filled with stories. It’s the story of the Dutch settlers who named the reef, of the engineers who built the light, and most importantly, of Kate Walker, the woman who embodied its spirit. Today, under the stewardship of the Noble Maritime Collection, the Robbins Reef Light continues to stand tall, a reminder of its vital role in the harbor’s history and a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Kate Walker. Her legacy, much like the light itself, continues to shine brightly.
