Ever wondered how a city like Riyadh stays powered? Here at Riyadh Power Plant 9, you are standing before a crucial piece of infrastructure. Riyadh Power Plant 9 is a key facility in supplying electricity to the region. It is located about 54 kilometers east of Riyadh.

Completed in August 2008, Riyadh Power Plant 9 boasts an impressive capacity. Its overall capacity reaches 5,980 MW. The plant consists of several blocks labeled A, B, C, D, E, and F. This division allows for efficient operation and management.

Originally, Riyadh Power Plant 9 was a 1,200MW oil-fired combined-cycle unit. It had four blocks. The plant’s design incorporates a closed cycle system. This minimizes water consumption by drawing water from ground wells. The first gas turbine was completed in mid-1997. The first combined-cycle block was commissioned the same year. The original plant was completed in 2002. Riyadh became home to the largest crude oil-fired power plant in the world. This was achieved through the construction of Riyadh Power Plant 9. It also involved the expansion of the existing PP8 facility.

The Riyadh Power Plant 9 also uses crude oil as its primary fuel. Natural gas serves as a backup fuel. Distillate is used for shutdowns and startups. There are also provisions for future conversion to a Combined Cycle. A Turbine Inlet Air Cooling System is also included. The plant’s infrastructure includes many Buildings like the Turbine Building, Warehouse Building, Workshop, Laboratory Buildings, Main Control Building, Fire Station Building, Security Building, Administration Building and a mosque.

The site also features extensive earthworks. Roads stretch around 25 kilometers. A storm water channel spans 5 kilometers. It also has a water treatment and pump house. Sewage treatment facilities are present. There are also metering shelters and a diesel or oil transfer pumping station.

Looking ahead, Riyadh Power Plant 9 is set for further expansion. A combined-cycle conversion aims to increase its capacity. This expansion will add approximately 240 megawatts. This will further enhance the plant’s contribution to the region’s power grid.

Doosan Enerbility is supplying turbines and generators for combined cycle power plants. These plants are under construction in Saudi Arabia. The South Korean power plant builder will ship a 650-megawatt steam turbine. They will also provide a generator to SEPCO3.

The Riyadh Power Plant 9 stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment. It reflects their dedication to meeting the growing energy demands of its capital and surrounding areas. It is not just a power plant. It represents progress, innovation, and a vision for a sustainable future.
