In 1961, a dream began to take shape in Riyadh. This dream, fueled by the ambition of local traders, would soon become the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI). Established by a resolution of the Council of Ministers, the RCCI was born from a desire to support and represent the burgeoning private sector in the Riyadh region. Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, was on the cusp of a major economic transformation. The RCCI’s establishment was perfectly timed to nurture and guide this growth. The Chamber’s location in Riyadh gave it a unique advantage. Its proximity to decision-making centers allowed it to effectively advocate for the interests of the private sector. This influence was crucial as Riyadh became a magnet for investment, leading the Kingdom in various economic activities. The RCCI’s role extended beyond merely representing businesses. It provided vital services to its members, including investment support, information resources, training programs, research and studies, and legal consultation. The RCCI also played a role in resolving commercial disputes through compromise and arbitration. Recognizing the importance of community engagement, the RCCI extended its services beyond the business realm. It contributed to local development studies, supported environmental initiatives, and participated in philanthropic activities. This commitment to social responsibility further solidified its position as a vital institution in Riyadh. The RCCI’s structure reflected its comprehensive approach to economic development. The General Assembly, representing all member companies, provided oversight. A Board of Directors, elected by the members and appointed by the Minister of Commerce & Industry, steered the Chamber’s direction. Specialized committees, comprised of experienced businesspeople, addressed specific sectors and issues. The General Secretariat executed the Chamber’s programs and initiatives. In 1985, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, then Governor of Riyadh, inaugurated the RCCI’s new building. This event marked a significant milestone in the Chamber’s journey. It underscored the growing importance of the private sector in Riyadh’s development. The Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry continues to be a driving force in Riyadh’s economic landscape. Its commitment to supporting businesses, fostering community development, and contributing to the national economy has made it a cornerstone of Riyadh’s success story.
