A breathtaking zig-zag roof greets you. Welcome to the Riverside Museum in Glasgow. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a celebration of Glasgow’s rich history. Its design by the famed Zaha Hadid Architects reflects the city’s engineering traditions. The building itself is a marvel of structural ingenuity. It cleverly combines material authenticity with geometric complexity.

Opened in 2011 the Riverside Museum replaced the Glasgow Museum of Transport. The original museum opened in 1964 by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. It first resided in a former tram depot. Later it moved to the Kelvin Hall. The Riverside Museum is the third and current home. It now stands proudly on the banks of the River Clyde. This location is significant. It’s on the site of the A & J Inglis shipyard. The shipyard built the iconic PS Waverley.

Inside over 3000 exhibits await. You’ll see everything from vintage cars and motorcycles to skateboards and prams. There’s even a dedicated ‘wall of cars’. This clever display showcases the museum’s impressive collection. The museum is free to enter. Donations are always welcome though. The museum hosts various events too. These include the Riverside Festival and the Glasgow Science Festival.

The museum’s collection is truly vast. It includes the oldest surviving pedal cycle. It boasts the world’s leading collection of Scottish-built cars and trucks. You can see pioneering examples from manufacturers like Argyll Arrol-Johnston and Albion. Modern Scottish-built cars are also featured. The Clyde Room houses around 250 ship models. These models represent the River Clyde’s contribution to maritime trade and the Royal Navy. They include iconic ships like the Queen Mary and the QE2.

The Riverside Museum doesn’t just celebrate road and sea transport. Glasgow’s railway heritage is showcased as well. Locomotives from various companies are on display. These include the Caledonian Railway the Highland Railway and the North British Railway. The museum also recreates the atmosphere of 1930s Glasgow. It even includes full-scale replicas of a Glasgow Subway station and the Regal Cinema. The museum offers educational group visits. These visits help students learn about transport and technology. There’s even a restaurant inside the museum. Visitors can enjoy meals while exploring the fascinating exhibits. The Riverside Museum is more than just a museum. It is an immersive experience. It is a celebration of Glasgow’s ingenuity and innovation. It’s a place where history comes alive. Enjoy your visit.
