West of Riverside station lies Riverside Yard. This is not just any train yard. It’s the largest storage yard for the Green Line. It’s also the main maintenance facility for these iconic light rail vehicles. Riverside Yard is a vital part of Boston’s transportation system. Think of it as the Green Line’s heart. It keeps the system running smoothly.

Riverside station itself has a rich history. A station existed here since the 1850s. It was originally part of the Boston and Worcester Railroad. The line later became part of the Boston and Albany Railroad. A new Riverside station was built in 1959. This was after the Highland branch converted from commuter rail to a streetcar line. The 1959 station was soon upgraded with new platforms in the 1990s. These platforms improved accessibility for passengers. Riverside is unique. It’s the only Green Line station with prepayment fare control. This means passengers can board at any door.

The station’s history is closely tied to Riverside Yard. The yard underwent significant changes over the years. It expanded to accommodate more trains and maintenance needs. It played a crucial role during emergencies. For example during a severe flood in 1996. The yard even has a track connection to the main commuter rail line. This allows the delivery of new light rail vehicles via rail. The yard’s future also looks bright. Plans are in place to modify it to accommodate new Type 10 LRVs in the late 2020s. The yard will continue to be a cornerstone of the Green Line’s operations for many years to come.

Beyond the immediate area around Riverside Yard and station the development plans are impressive. Transit-oriented development has been a focus since the 1980s. A large mixed-use development is planned. This includes residential units office space and retail. The revised plan approved in 2024 features a phased approach. Phase one includes residential buildings and a parking garage. Phase two will add office and lab space. This ambitious plan will transform the area around Riverside. It will seamlessly integrate with the existing transportation infrastructure. Riverside Yard and station are not just about trains. They are integral parts of Boston’s dynamic urban landscape.
