Right here stands the Riverdale Jewish Center. It is more than just a building. It is a vibrant hub of faith and community. Since its founding in 1954, the Riverdale Jewish Center, abbreviated as RJC, has been a cornerstone of Modern Orthodox Judaism in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
Imagine the dedication of those early members. They sought to create a space. It would unite, support, and inspire Jewish individuals from all walks of life. The Riverdale Jewish Center was founded by Yeshiva University. It has remained a bastion of that institution.
Over the years, esteemed rabbis have guided the congregation. Jacob Sable was the founder. Other notable leaders include Irving Greenberg, Yehezkel Hartmann, Joshua Shmidman, Abner Weiss, and Jonathan Rosenblatt. Currently, Rabbi Dovid Zirkind serves as the Senior Rabbi. Rabbi Tzvi Benoff is the assistant rabbi.
The Riverdale Jewish Center’s commitment extends beyond religious services. It offers numerous religious, social, and educational programs. These programs nourish individuals of all backgrounds and ages. They encourage growth in Torah learning, connection with God, and celebration of Jewish life.
The Riverdale Jewish Center’s building itself tells a story of community and adaptation. Originally built in the 1950s, it underwent significant enlargement in the 1990s. Today, it serves a dual purpose. During the week, the Atmosphere Academy charter school uses part of the building for its eighth-grade classes. On weekends, the synagogue reclaims its space.
Building Studio Architects completed renovations in 2023. These included redesigning the gym for audiences and relocating the synagogue entry. The lobby received a complete rebuild. New LED cove lighting was installed. New cherry doors and millwork now connect the lobby to the iconic sanctuary ark. White stone floors and walls brighten the interior.
The Riverdale Jewish Center has faced challenges. In 2009, a bomb plot targeted the synagogue. Thanks to the New York City Police Department, the plot was foiled. In 2021, vandalism occurred. Rocks were thrown through the synagogue’s windows.
Despite these incidents, the Riverdale Jewish Center remains resilient. It stands as a testament to the strength and unity of the Jewish community in Riverdale. It continues to adapt. It continues to thrive. The Riverdale Jewish Center is working tirelessly for the spiritual growth and physical welfare of the Riverdale community, the Jewish people, the State of Israel, the United States of America, and humankind.
