The River Rouge area transformed from farmland to industry. Its location was perfect for manufacturing. It sat between iron ore and coal mines. The River Rouge runs 127 miles through Southeastern Michigan. It flows into the Detroit River. The meeting point is at Zug Island. This island marks the boundary. It sits between the cities of River Rouge and Detroit.
The River Rouge has four branches. These are the main upper middle and lower branches. The main branch’s headwaters start in Rochester Hills. The upper branch begins in West Bloomfield Township. The middle branch forms in Northville. The lower branch starts in Superior Township.
The river was heavily polluted. In 1969 oil on the surface caught fire. The Clean Water Act of 1972 changed things. It became unlawful to discharge pollution into navigable waters.
