On the banks of the mighty Mississippi, a community thrives. It bears the name River Ridge. River Ridge’s story begins long before its official naming in 1974. The land whispers tales of French colonists and their vast sugar plantations. These plantations stretched back from the river’s edge, their narrow waterfronts a testament to the importance of water access. Enslaved Africans toiled in the fields, their labor fueling the prosperity of families like the Trudeaus and Sauvés.

River Ridge still bears the imprint of this era. Street names like Sauvé Road echo the past. This road is a reminder of a dramatic event in 1849. A levee failure at the Sauvé Providence plantation resulted in Sauvé’s Crevasse, a devastating flood that inundated parts of New Orleans. This crevasse occurred near where the Mississippi River once branched, forming the Metairie and Gentilly Ridges. River Ridge transformed over the centuries. From a rural landscape dotted with farms, it blossomed into a suburban haven in the post-World War II era. The G.I. Bill empowered veterans to purchase homes. Large-scale development followed, rapidly transforming the area.

Originally, this area was a patchwork of names. “Little Farms,” “East Bank,” and “Rural Acres” were just a few. The name “River Ridge” emerged in 1974 to unify the community. This name reflects its location along the Mississippi River and its elevated position on the natural levee. River Ridge isn’t just a place of historical significance. It’s a vibrant community. In 2019, a River Ridge Little League baseball team etched their name in history. They became the first team from Louisiana to win the Little League World Series.

Today, River Ridge is a blend of old and new. Remnants of its plantation past coexist with modern suburban homes. The Mississippi River remains a defining feature, shaping the community’s identity. From sugar plantations to suburban neighborhoods, River Ridge’s story continues to unfold. It’s a story of resilience, transformation, and community pride.
