Rising Tides is located on the East Boston Greenway. This path stretches from the harbor to the airport. The Greenway itself lies slightly below sea level. The Rising Tides Mural marks where the sea level will rise with each 0.5°C increase in global temperature.
Sophy Tuttle, a Boston local, created this impactful artwork. She calls it a form of data visualization. It creates an embodied experience from abstract climate numbers. Tuttle transforms scientific facts into a rich visual landscape. This landscape is easily accessible to everyone. You don’t need money or status to understand it.
Look closely. Notice the three Saltmarsh sparrows depicted in the tall grass. These birds currently nest in East Boston’s Belle Isle Marsh. Sadly, they will likely disappear within 50 years. Rising tides will displace their natural habitat. The mural hyper-localizes the impacts of sea level rise. It showcases the beauty of a creature that will be lost to the climate crisis.
The East Boston community has a strong connection with the ocean. Many residents are working-class and immigrants. They are among the most vulnerable to climate change consequences. The Rising Tides Mural beautifies public space. It communicates thought-provoking messages about our water-based cultures. These include sailing, fishing, and whale watching.
The Sea Walls project brought this mural to East Boston. HarborArts, an East Boston-based initiative, partnered with Sea Walls. Together, they facilitated the creation of 21 murals. These murals address pressing environmental issues. They beautify some of East Boston’s historic buildings. The Rising Tides Mural, in particular, stands out.
Consider the artist’s intention. Sophy Tuttle aimed to disrupt deeply embedded beliefs about nature. She renders birds, animals, and plants to evoke awe and reverence. Even though extinction looms, her paintings call attention to the beauty that still exists.
