Hidden within a sprawling pasture, where the city skyline kisses the Taunus hills, lies the whimsical Rinder-Karussell Installation. This isn’t your typical merry-go-round. Instead of painted ponies, life-sized wooden cows rest on a large turntable, their stillness a playful contrast to the real cattle grazing nearby. The Rinder-Karussell, nestled in the heart of the Rinderwiesen (cattle meadows), offers a unique blend of art and nature. This 12-hectare expanse, situated between Sulzbach, Schwalbach, and Eschborn, was once a concrete and asphalt jungle of paths. Now, it’s a revitalized green space thanks to the Regionalpark RheinMain. The Rinder-Karussell installation itself is a collaborative effort, brought to life by the Regionalpark RheinMain Taunushang and funded in part by Fraport AG. The wooden cows, each one a testament to artistry and craftsmanship, invite you to climb aboard. Give the carousel a spin, although it requires a bit of muscle to get these bovine beauties moving. The real stars of the show, however, are the living, breathing cows that call this pasture home. They belong to a local Sulzbacher farmer and graze peacefully among the wooden sculptures. It’s a rare sight, these gentle giants so close to the city, adding a touch of rural charm to this urban oasis. The surrounding landscape enhances the magic. The paths, once hard and unyielding, are now soft and meandering, perfect for a stroll. New trees and native shrubs create a “forest mantle” along the edge of the neighboring Arboretum, further blurring the line between city and countryside. The Rinder-Karussell Installation isn’t just a place to play; it’s a place to pause and appreciate the simple things. It’s a place to contemplate the meeting of art and nature, the urban and the rural. As you leave, the image of those wooden cows against the Frankfurt skyline will remain. A gentle reminder of the whimsical surprises hidden within the heart of Rhein-Main.
