Gazing up at this impressive structure, one might wonder how many cheers have echoed within its walls. This is LionTree Arena, formerly known as RIMAC Arena, the heart of UC San Diego’s athletic spirit. LionTree Arena stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to sports and recreation. Originally opened in January 1995 as part of the larger RIMAC Complex, it has been a vital part of campus life for nearly three decades.
LionTree Arena wasn’t always its name. It was christened with its current moniker in the summer of 2022, thanks to a generous scholarship gift. Before that, it was simply RIMAC Arena, a key component of the Recreation, IntraMural and Athletic Complex. This complex was the largest of its kind among NCAA Division III athletic programs upon completion. The arena’s nearly 24-year history saw its first major renovation completed in September 2018. This renovation brought modern amenities, including retractable seating, sleek glass railings, and a VIP skybox that can host roughly 125 guests. The arena also received a technological upgrade. A massive 50-foot wide Daktronics digital video display and scoreboard now dominate the south end. State-of-the-art courtside LED scorer’s tables add to the modern feel. The addition of the Dana Chaiken Production Studio allows for live event broadcasts for various partners, including ESPN.
LionTree Arena is a flexible venue. It can comfortably hold nearly 4,000 fans for basketball and volleyball games. Its capacity can be further expanded to approximately 4,500 for concerts or guest speakers. The vast 44,000 square foot floor can even be divided into five basketball courts. Interestingly, several NBA teams have used these courts for pre-season training camps. Even a former UC San Diego men’s basketball player, Brett Stuckey, contributed to the arena’s legacy. He served as project manager for Turner Construction during the 2018 renovation. This former Triton athlete played from 2006-2009, bringing a personal touch to the project. He also played a similar role in the improvements made at Triton Ballpark.
LionTree Arena is more than just a basketball and volleyball venue. It’s home to the men’s and women’s teams for both sports. The arena provides a true home-court advantage with enthusiastic support from the campus and local communities. It’s a place where Triton pride comes alive. LionTree Arena is a multi-purpose facility designed with state-of-the-art equipment and a focus on customer service. Every room is climate-controlled. Many spaces are filled with natural lighting. The building also houses the offices for Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreation, and Sports Facilities departments. It even provides recreational, educational, and meeting spaces for a wide array of activities.
