Riggin Memorial Field stands as a testament to local pride. It is a vibrant hub for sports and recreation. But did you know it’s named after a true hometown hero?
Let me introduce you to Captain Charles Holland Riggin. He was a U.S. Army serviceman. He was killed in action in France during World War I. Before his military service, Captain Riggin was a school teacher. He eventually became the principal of East Rutherford High School. This field honors his legacy. It has been over 100 years since his passing in 1918.
Notice the layout of Riggin Memorial Field. It is a well-thought-out design. In 2019, the field underwent a refurbishment project. This included a new turf replacement and track work. The town used cooperative purchasing to save money. Separate contracts were awarded for different jobs.
Look around at the various sports facilities. There is a varsity football field, a baseball field, and a cinder track. A master plan created the best arrangement for these facilities. The upgrades included a 400-meter, 8-lane track. There are also new synthetic turf fields for football, soccer, and varsity baseball. You can also see two natural turf Little League fields. The park includes new grandstands, a field events area, and a concession building.
This Little League program started in 1951. The Little League field was shifted. Its first-base line runs parallel to Railroad Avenue. Now, batters look directly at the highway. The field has a regulation Little League outfield fence distance of 200 feet.
Over there, near home plate, is a plaque. It memorializes Tom Schreiber. He was a long-time Little League coach who died in 2004. His motto was “It’s all about the kids.”
Interestingly, you might even catch a cricket game here. The field is multi-use. It is great to see different sports being enjoyed.
