Heard the one about a sewage farm becoming a bird paradise? That’s the story of the Rieselfelder Münster. Just six kilometers north of Münster’s city center lies this amazing nature reserve.

Once upon a time, the Rieselfelder Münster was designed to handle Münster’s wastewater. The city’s population grew. More wastewater caused issues downstream. So, in 1901, a large area was designated to purify wastewater through a process called “Verrieselung”. This means “sewage farming” in German.

For decades, wastewater flowed here from the pump house. It irrigated agricultural land. Farmers grew crops and raised livestock. The treated wastewater fertilized the nutrient-poor soil. However, by the 1960s, the area couldn’t handle the increasing wastewater volume.

The Rieselfelder Münster started transforming. More areas became grassland. Some areas were flooded year-round. These changes created an ideal resting and breeding ground for water and wading birds. Many wetland habitats disappeared across Europe. The Rieselfelder became a crucial refuge.

In 1968, the Biologische Station Rieselfelder Münster was founded. It aimed to study and protect this unique habitat. But in 1975, a modern sewage plant was completed. The Rieselfelder faced a new threat. The city planned to turn part of it into an industrial area. There was even talk of a nuclear power plant.

A citizens’ initiative fought back. They wanted to protect the area’s natural value. In the mid-1980s, they succeeded. The Rieselfelder Münster was designated a nature reserve.

Today, the Rieselfelder Münster is a Natura 2000 site. It is a European bird sanctuary. This area offers refuge to many endangered bird species. The Rieselfelder Münster is also a popular destination for locals.

The Rieselfelder Münster spans about 4.3 square kilometers. It is divided into two parts by the Coermühle road. The northwestern part is a strict nature reserve. Access is limited. Researchers are studying the effects on invertebrates. Snails and crustaceans ingest these plastic particles. The long-term consequences are still being investigated.
