“Rienzi,” a name that echoes through time. Rienzi Playground stands here today. But do you know the story behind the name? Let me share a tale of courage and a trusty steed.

Once, this playground was known as Sheridan Playground. It honored General Philip Henry Sheridan. He was a hero of the Civil War. But later, the playground received a new name: Rienzi Playground. It was named after Sheridan’s horse. Yes, a horse!

Now, you might wonder why a horse deserves such an honor. The story goes like this. In 1864, at Cedar Creek, Sheridan’s troops were caught off guard. A surprise attack threatened to rout them. Sheridan was miles away. But upon hearing the news, he didn’t hesitate.

He mounted Rienzi. Together, man and horse embarked on a legendary twenty-mile ride. Imagine the pounding hooves. Feel the wind in their faces. Picture the determination in Sheridan’s eyes. Rienzi carried him swiftly. They reached the battlefield.

Sheridan rallied his men. Inspired by his presence, they turned the tide. Victory was snatched from the jaws of defeat. Rienzi, the horse, became a symbol of that ride. The horse became a symbol of courage and swift action.

This Rienzi Playground has seen many changes over the years. In 1941, the city announced its construction. The WPA, or Works Progress Administration, began the work. Sixteen buildings were removed to make way for it. The plans included many things. There were volleyball courts. There were basketball courts. Also, there were tennis and handball courts. A wading pool was planned. A brick comfort station, slides, swings, seesaws, a sandpit, and an exercise unit were on the cards. Also, a softball diamond should be built.

But war changed everything. Shortages delayed the work. The playground wasn’t completed until after the war. Even then, it was completed along with eight other unfinished WPA sites.

Today, Rienzi Playground is a place for children to play. It is a place for families to gather. It is a place for the community. It is more than just swings and slides. It is a reminder of history. It is a reminder of a general and his horse. It is a reminder of courage and determination.

So, as you watch the children playing, remember Rienzi. Remember the horse that helped to save the day. Remember the power of a name. Remember the history beneath your feet here at Rienzi Playground.
