Metairie, Louisiana once held a school that shaped young lives. It was Ridgewood Preparatory School. Founded in 1948, Ridgewood began as a college preparatory school for boys. Ottis O. Stuckey and Albert J. Kern were its founders. The school’s first location was on North Line Avenue in Old Metairie.
Let’s step back in time to Ridgewood Preparatory School’s early days. In 1952, Ridgewood embraced a new chapter by becoming co-educational. This meant girls could attend too. The school continued to grow. In 1972, Ridgewood moved to its final location on Pasadena Avenue.
For many years, Ridgewood Preparatory School offered education for grades PreK-12. The school was known for its diverse student body. Students came from different parishes and even countries around the world. In 2007, 15% of Ridgewood students were foreign citizens. They hailed from Argentina, Nigeria, Japan, and other nations.
Ridgewood Preparatory School maintained a student-teacher ratio of 10:1. This ensured students received personal attention. The school operated as a non-profit. An advisory board aided its functions. Ridgewood was approved by the State Department of Education. It was also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Ridgewood Preparatory School faced challenges. Hurricane Katrina impacted the school community. Ridgewood reopened quickly after the storm. Student numbers decreased from over 600 to 210. In 2020, the Justice Department reached a settlement with Ridgewood. This was due to a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The school had denied admission to a child with spina bifida.
On January 9, 2023, Ridgewood announced its closure. Only 114 of 145 students returned after the holidays. Low enrollment and financial issues led to this decision. Ridgewood Preparatory School had a rich athletic program. It was a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Students competed in football, baseball, softball, and other sports. Ridgewood won state championships in baseball, football, and softball. The school’s colors were blue and gold. Its slogan was “Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle.” Though now closed, Ridgewood Preparatory School remains a part of Metairie’s history.
