Before us stands Ridgewood Baptist Church a beacon of faith and community in this vibrant neighborhood. Its story is one of immigration, adaptation, and enduring commitment to its mission.

The Ridgewood Baptist Church’s roots stretch back to 1852. A German immigrant named Jeremias Grimmell started a Sunday school. He wanted to serve the children roaming the streets of Williamsburg Brooklyn. This small act of kindness blossomed into something remarkable.

In 1854, the First German Baptist Church of Brooklyn was officially formed. It joined the fellowship of Baptist Churches in Brooklyn New York in January 1855. The early congregation first gathered on Majeur Street now Remsen Street at Graham Avenue. Later in 1865 the society moved to Montrose Avenue near Union Avenue.

As the congregation grew they needed a new space. In 1925, a significant transformation occurred. The First German Baptist Church of Gowanus merged into the congregation. A new church building was constructed at 64-13 Catalpa Avenue in Ridgewood. With this move and merger, the church adopted its current name: Ridgewood Baptist Church.

Did you know that Ridgewood was historically part of Brooklyn? It is now situated in the Borough of Queens. This reflects the changing landscape of New York City itself.

The current building is not just a place of worship. It also has a rich musical history. In 1925, a M.P. Möller organ was installed. This organ has two manuals 21 stops and 10 ranks. Its electro-pneumatic action fills the sanctuary with beautiful music. The organ enhances the worship experience.

Ridgewood Baptist Church is more than just a historical landmark. It is a living breathing community. It offers various services including Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday Bible study at 7:00 p.m.. The church also streams its services online.

Moreover, Ridgewood Baptist Church extends its reach beyond spiritual nourishment. It operates a food pantry. The church provides free groceries to those in need. This reflects its commitment to serving the community.
