Wow Ridgeland Mansion what a sight! This stunning building in West Fairmount Park has quite the story. Built sometime between 1752 and 1762 it started as a simple farmhouse. Imagine William Couch the yeoman who purchased the land in 1718. He likely never envisioned his humble beginnings would lead to this.

Ridgeland Mansion wasn’t always a mansion. It grew. Later owners expanded it. The city even got involved acquiring the property in 1869. That’s when Fairmount Park expanded. Ridgeland Mansion became a part of something bigger.

A piece of American history lives here. George Clymer a Founding Father owned the mansion between 1784 and 1794. He rented it out though he never actually lived there. Interesting fact right?

Look closely. You’ll see unique oval windows. Two small ones are on the northwestern facade. A larger semicircular one graces the southeastern gable. This mansion is a blend of styles. The main part is Wissahickon schist. Wood-frame extensions and stone foundations are added on. There’s a two-story addition a clapboard addition and even a kitchen wing. The original structure is rectangular three bays wide and two bays deep.

Ridgeland Mansion also boasts barns and an ice house. The mansion itself has original features. Federal-style mantlepieces and beautiful parquet floors remain. These are remnants of its past. They whisper tales of elegant gatherings and comfortable living.

Today the Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia leases Ridgeland Mansion. They use it for events and community gatherings. The city requires lessees to help restore and maintain the mansion. It’s a beautiful example of public-private partnership. They preserve history for everyone to enjoy.
