“A ship with three names and three lives,” the old sailor rasped, pointing a gnarled finger at the Rickmer Rickmers. “Aye, she’s seen more than most.” The Rickmer Rickmers. A name that echoes with the clang of hammers on steel, the creak of timbers under strain, and the cries of gulls overhead. Launched in 1896 from the Rickmers shipyard in Bremerhaven, she began her life hauling rice and bamboo across the vast expanse of the Pacific. This magnificent three-masted barque, a steel giant of the seas, was christened after the grandson of the shipyard’s founder. Imagine her sails billowing against the horizon, laden with the exotic treasures of the East. But her peaceful trading days were numbered. In 1912, she was sold, renamed Max, and pressed into the less glamorous but essential saltpeter trade between Hamburg and Chile. Then the Great War erupted, and the Rickmer Rickmers, then sailing under the name Max, was caught in its unforgiving net. Seized in the Azores by the Portuguese, she was loaned to the British, rechristened Flores, and tasked with transporting war materials. The once peaceful trader now carried the weight of conflict. After the war, she returned to Portugal, not to her former life, but to a new purpose. Reborn as the NRP Sagres, she became a training ship for the Portuguese Navy, her masts now adorned with the hopes and dreams of young cadets. She even found glory on the racing circuit, winning the Tall Ships’ Race in 1958. Decades passed. The Sagres, once a symbol of youthful ambition, was eventually replaced and relegated to a depot ship, her sailing days seemingly over. Relegated to a life moored in Lisbon, renamed Santo André, her future seemed bleak. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Rickmer Rickmers was given a third life. In 1983, she was rediscovered by a group of Hamburg enthusiasts. Brought back to her homeland, restored to her former glory, and once again bearing her original name, the Rickmer Rickmers now rests in Hamburg harbor, a museum ship, her decks open to all who wish to hear her tales. Look closely at her green hull. Imagine the journeys she’s taken, the storms she’s weathered, the lives she’s touched. The Rickmer Rickmers stands as a testament to resilience, a living embodiment of maritime history, whispering stories of distant shores and bygone eras.
