The Richmond Hill Baptist Church was designed to provide a traditional exterior aesthetic. The land developer wanted to create a traditional ambiance in the community. This was in keeping with a preexisting historic mansion. It provided a theme for the entire Richmond Hill area.
The church’s conventional floor plan was not typical. It has a long and narrow nave. This is typical for the historical style. However the church group desired a more contemporary fan-shaped seating arrangement. As a result they worked hard at establishing a geometry. This geometry would lend itself to the desired aesthetic. It would also accommodate the desired seating arrangement.
The final design of Richmond Hill Baptist Church provides all of the character and charm of a traditional country church. Yet it accommodates a very contemporary and efficient seating arrangement. A spacious mezzanine surrounds the main sanctuary seating. It tiers down into the main floor from both sides. This accommodates interactive services. It allows direct access to the podium from the upper level seating. It also places as many people as possible within close distance of the pastor and stage events.
At the lower level, Christian education spaces benefit from naturally lit sunken courts. These sunken courts also allow access to the outdoors. The mandate was a traditional exterior aesthetic.
