What’s unique about Rice Military? Its rich history! Before we stand in the trendy heart of Rice Military, imagine a vast military training ground. That’s Camp Logan, a World War I-era camp that occupied most of what is now Memorial Park and its surroundings.
The land near Camp Logan belonged to prominent families- the Rice family and the Howe family. William Marsh Rice, a key figure in Rice University’s founding, was a former landowner here. Fast forward to 1910, Bankers Trust Co. acquired these lands, giving birth to the Rice Military Subdivision.
This subdivision, south of Washington Avenue, north of Memorial Drive, west of Shepherd Drive, and east of Westcott Street, initially housed around 400 homes. The name stuck and expanded to include areas south of I-10, north of Buffalo Bayou, and east of Memorial Park, forming what we call Rice Military/Washington Corridor today.
Imagine quaint bungalows and shotgun houses lining these streets. These homes attracted artists and young professionals in the 1990s, sparking a transformation. Today, Rice Military thrives as a hip, mixed-use neighborhood, boasting single-family homes, multi-level townhomes, and condominiums.
