Where Hollywood glitz meets Latino heritage stands the Ricardo Montalban Theatre. This isn’t just another venue. It’s a landmark with a rich, multifaceted past. Let’s uncover the stories within these walls.

Originally named the Wilkes Vine Street Theatre it opened in 1927. It was Hollywood’s first Broadway-style legitimate theater. Imagine the excitement on opening night. The premiere production was “An American Tragedy”. This theater quickly became a cultural hub.

But the Great Depression brought change. In 1931 the theater transformed into the Mirror Theatre. It became part of a movie chain run by Howard Hughes. For a time it screened films instead of live plays.

The Columbia Broadcasting System CBS bought the theater in 1936. It became the CBS Radio Playhouse. The Lux Radio Theatre found its home here. Stars like Cary Grant and Marlene Dietrich graced its stage. Cecil B. DeMille even hosted shows here.

In 1953 Huntington Hartford an A and P heir purchased the theater. He modernized it. It reopened as the Huntington Hartford Theatre. Helen Hayes starred in the premiere production “What Every Woman Knows”. For ten years Hartford presented high-profile shows.

James Doolittle acquired the theater in 1964. It was then renamed the Doolittle Theatre. Doolittle ran it successfully for 20 years.

The Nosotros Foundation bought the theater in 1999. In 2004 it reopened as the Ricardo Montalban Theatre. Its mission was to promote Latino stage productions. This marked a new chapter.

The Ricardo Montalban Theatre faced financial difficulties but persevered. It now hosts film festivals art galleries and rooftop film screenings. It serves as a rental venue for traveling productions.

The Montalban’s exterior even played a role in the film “Burlesque”. It appeared as the “Burlesque Lounge” theatre.

Interestingly the Ricardo Montalban Theatre is often mistaken for other Hollywood theaters. It is not the Hollywood Playhouse or the El Capitan Theatre.

The Ricardo Montalban Theatre stands as a testament to Hollywood’s evolution. It has transformed from a legitimate theater to a movie house to a radio playhouse and back again. Today it honors Latino artists and culture. As you stand here remember the countless stories that have unfolded within these walls. The Ricardo Montalban Theatre is more than a building. It is a living legacy.
