Consider yourself transported to a place where vibrant colors explode in a symphony of nature. We are standing at the Rhododendron Park in Graal-Müritz near Rostock. This park is not just a garden, it’s a living canvas painted with the hues of thousands of rhododendrons.

The Rhododendron Park spans 4.5 hectares. It sits just behind the dunes of the Baltic Sea beach. Imagine, a floral paradise so close to the sea.

This park’s story began between 1955 and 1961. The Rostocker garden architect Friedrich-Karl Evert created it. He transformed a former sand pit into this unique landscape.

The Rhododendron Park is unique in Mecklenburg. It is also one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Here, rhododendrons from North America and Eurasia thrive. These plants can reach up to six meters tall.

Within the park, there are around 2,500 plants. These include about 60 different rhododendron hybrids. The park was declared a monument in December 1986.

May and June bring the Rhododendron Park to life. Over 2,000 perennials burst into full bloom. The air fills with their sweet fragrance. The park transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors. During this time, the Rhododendron Queen herself gives tours. Weekly park concerts enhance the sensory experience. The Rhododendron Park Festival is a beloved tradition. Everyone is welcome to join the celebration.

Between 2005 and 2007, the park underwent a comprehensive renovation. The park got a new concert pavilion. Thanks to a closable glass front and heating, it is usable all year round.

The story of the Rhododendron Park also includes a new variety. It is named “IGA Rostock”. This honors the Internationale Gartenbauausstellung. The Seidel family, known for their rhododendron breeding, cultivated it. Their plants are known for their frost hardiness.

The Rhododendron Park is more than just a collection of plants. It’s a place where nature, culture, and history intertwine. It invites you to explore, relax, and celebrate the beauty of the rhododendron. A visit here is a journey through color and fragrance. It is a testament to the vision of its creator and the enduring appeal of nature’s artistry.
