“Four million visitors!” whispers the wind as it dances around the Rheinkirmes Entrance South. Nearly four million people from all over the world choose to step through this very entrance every July. Their mission? To experience the Largest Fair on the Rhine. While the Rheinkirmes Entrance South may seem unassuming now, in a few short weeks, it will be abuzz with anticipation. Imagine the joyous shrieks, the tantalizing aromas of bratwurst and beer, and the vibrant lights beckoning you into a world of pure fun! This iconic fair, a tradition deeply intertwined with Düsseldorf’s history, isn’t actually called “Rheinkirmes”. It officially celebrates the feast of the city’s patron saint, Apollinaris of Ravenna, and the Kirchweihfest of St. Lambertus Basilica. It all started in 1435 as a humble parish fair organized by the St. Sebastianus Shooting Club. Over the centuries it transformed from a local celebration into the joyous spectacle we see today. So, get ready to create your own stories as you cross the Rheinkirmes Entrance South and into the heart of one of Germany’s most beloved events!
