This includes several islands like the Mariannenaue. The former Hindenburg Bridge was destroyed during World War II and not rebuilt. Today the area is well served by roads and rail. The A3 Autobahn crosses the eastern part. The B42 runs along the Rhine but can flood at high water levels. The high-speed rail line between Cologne and Frankfurt passes through. Local trains connect the area to Wiesbaden Koblenz and Limburg.
The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis has a thriving economy. It is famous for its wine production. Rheingau wines especially Riesling are world-renowned. Assmannshausen is known for its Spätburgunder red wine. Wine tourism is a major factor in the economy. The Rheingau Musik Festival and the Rheinsteig hiking trail boosted tourism. The Naturpark Rhein-Taunus protects the natural beauty for recreation. The Untertaunus has agriculture and small businesses. Many commute to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. The area also has three universities.
