This memorial marks the spot where the RFA Bedenham was unloading. The ship was at Gun Wharf when disaster struck. A lighter alongside the Bedenham exploded. The explosion triggered a massive fire. The fire spread quickly to the Bedenham. This led to a catastrophic explosion on the ship. The RFA Bedenham sank.
The explosion claimed thirteen lives. Many buildings in Gibraltar suffered extensive damage. Even The Convent and Gibraltar’s two cathedrals were affected. The city mourned.
In 2001, fifty years after the explosion, this memorial was erected. The Gibraltar Heritage Trust placed this plaque. It serves as a reminder of the lives lost. It honors those who perished in the tragedy.
Among the victims were Chief Fire Officer Albert Alexander Indoe and Sub Officer George Campbell Henderson. They belonged to the Dockyard Fire Service. Both men displayed exceptional bravery. They attempted to extinguish the fire. They were posthumously awarded gallantry medals. Sub Officer Henderson received the George Cross. Chief Fire Officer Indoe received the King’s Police and Fire Services Medal for Gallantry.
Both heroes were buried in North Front Cemetery in Gibraltar. For seventy years, their graves did not mention their awards for gallantry. The Civil Defence Association corrected this omission. Plaques were added to their graves. They commemorate their bravery and sacrifice.
