“Who was Rev. Dr. Maggie Howard?” I wonder aloud as we approach this lively playground. The Rev. Dr. Maggie Howard Playground stands as a vibrant testament to a remarkable woman. She dedicated her life to serving her community.
Rev. Dr. Maggie Howard was born and raised right here in New York City. She lived in the nearby Stapleton Houses. Her journey began on October 19 1963. Sadly, it concluded on June 13 2020.
Howard’s commitment to education was unwavering. She earned an associate degree in finance from the College of Staten Island. She also obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theology from Boulden Seminary in Delaware. She even pursued doctoral studies.
In 1991, Rev. Dr. Maggie Howard was ordained. In 2000, she became the lead pastor of Stapleton A.M.E. This is the oldest African American church in Staten Island. She was a pillar of the community. She provided counseling and mentoring services to many.
Rev. Dr. Maggie Howard worked with FEMA’s Project Hope. She aided Hurricane Sandy victims. She also strived to improve the neighborhood as a mediator. This was through the NYPD’s Cease Fire Program. This program aimed to prevent gang-related violence. She was also a Peer Recovery Coach. Additionally, she was a Citizens Police Academy graduate.
Her inspirational message of education and social justice reached far and wide. She spread it to Stapleton and around the world through her missionary work. She ministered to individuals in Haiti and Trinidad. She also visited Liberia.
Rev. Dr. Maggie Howard’s work touched many lives. She received the Women of Achievement Award from the Staten Island Advance. She was known as the “church that helps”. She helped the addicted and homeless. She helped move them into productive lives.
