Sweeping across the University Medical Center Freiburg, a giant lifesaver hangs suspended. This is Rettung, a striking sculpture by Gregor Passens. Rettung, meaning “rescue” in German, is more than just art. It’s a symbol of hope and security, clinging to the pedestrian bridge connecting the old and new buildings of the hospital. The massive steel ring, a full 8 meters in diameter, is hard to miss. Its bright red cross, tilted at an 18 + 8 degree angle, immediately connects it to the universal symbol of medical aid. The Rettung sculpture isn’t static. The slightly offset central axis of the red cross creates a sense of movement, a feeling of dynamic energy. This oversized lifesaver is visible from all angles: the walkways, the courtyard, even the inside of the ring itself. Walking through Rettung offers a changing perspective, transforming the viewer’s experience. Its sheer size makes it a landmark within the sprawling hospital complex. Positioned near the emergency room and the rooftop helipad, Rettung reinforces the hospital’s constant readiness. The title, “Freischwimmer – Überdimensionierter Rettungsring” translates to “Freischwimmer – Oversized Lifebuoy”. “Freischwimmer” is a German swimming certificate. The name symbolizes the safety precautions inherent in rescue operations, adding another layer of meaning to this powerful artwork.
