“Justice has been served here for over a century” a weathered stone whispered. Welcome to Retten i Roskilde. This isn’t just any courthouse. It’s a silent witness to centuries of legal battles. Retten i Roskilde opened its doors in 1919. That’s when the new law of 1916 finally took effect.

Before 1919 justice was handled differently. Imagine two judges covering the entire area. Roskilde Kobstad and the surrounding areas were under their jurisdiction. It was a simpler time a much smaller workload. The original courthouse was in the old town hall. It was built in 1878 by architect Vilh Petersen. It served as courtroom and jail.

The court expanded. By 1926 the workload necessitated a change. One area was detached and moved to the court in Køge. The court’s administrative offices also moved around several times. It finally found a home in 1954. The old KFUM building became the new offices. It is a bit ironic.

But the journey didn’t stop there. In 1963 Roskilde’s court system split. One court covered the city. The other covered the surrounding countryside. They both shared the old courthouse in Jernbanegade 21. The administrative offices continued their migration to other locations.

The 1970s brought more change. A major municipal reform reshaped the court districts. Greve and Solrød were added. A new sub-court was established in Karlslunde. It needed space. They made use of the Greve town hall initially. Later they built a dedicated courthouse there.

In 1976 a new building arose. The courts moved to Helligkorsvej. The old courtrooms remained open for certain tasks. This includes preliminary hearings and matters involving prisoners. The final merger came in 1987. Roskilde Byret and Roskilde Herredsret united becoming Retten i Roskilde as we know it.

The number of judges increased. It grew from four to six then to eight with a president at the helm. A major reshuffling occurred in 2007. The court system reformed its jurisdictions. Retten i Roskilde became one of the seven largest city courts in Denmark. It encompasses Greve Køge Lejre Ringsted Roskilde Solrød and Stevns.

Today Retten i Roskilde employs 65 to 70 people. This includes a president and ten other judges. In 2014 Retten i Roskilde found a new permanent home. The state of the art building at Ved Ringen 1 is quite remarkable. It stands tall a modern symbol of justice in Roskilde. It stands as a testament to the continuous evolution of this important institution. The stories etched within its walls are a captivating reminder of the ever-changing face of justice.
