Hidden amidst the bustling energy of Redondo Beach, California, stands the Resurrection Lutheran Church. It’s a place where faith, history, and community intertwine. The Resurrection Lutheran Church, often called RLC, began its journey on October 21, 1951. The South Bay area was experiencing a population boom. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America saw a need. A need for a spiritual home for the growing community. The church started with just 99 members, led by Pastor Lyle Gangsei. Their first gathering place, a humble chapel built in 1952, later became Rygh Hall. This hall honors Pastor Marvin Rygh, who served the congregation for 28 years. As the congregation grew, so did their dreams. In 1963, they broke ground on a new sanctuary. This sanctuary, dedicated in 1964, became the heart of RLC. The church’s membership peaked at over 1,800 in 1965. Resurrection Lutheran Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of community service and a nurturer of young minds. In 1952, they established Riviera Hall Lutheran School. Starting with grades K-2, the school expanded to include K-8 by 1956. Today, it serves over 200 students. Even a former US President has graced its halls. Bill Clinton attended his nephew’s graduation from Riviera Hall in 2008. The church’s impact extends beyond education. RLC has hosted benefit concerts, supported those experiencing homelessness, and organized events for local families. Music has filled the sanctuary, carrying messages of hope and resilience. In 1993, the Philippine Orphan’s Choir performed “Never a Child.” This concert benefited Filipino orphans in Cebu. In 2007, the Watoto Children’s Choir touched hearts with their music. One parishioner, Corina O’Neill, gifted drumsticks to a young choir member. Years later, he returned as a chaperone and drummer, crediting the church for his musical journey. Even within its walls, hidden treasures have been found. In 2010, a member stumbled upon a Crown of Thorns sculpture in the heater room. This discovery led to the unveiling of a hidden art collection, showcasing works by notable artists and former church members. The Resurrection Lutheran Church has been a witness to both quiet acts of service and grand celebrations of faith. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of community. A place where lives are transformed. A place where history is made.
