Founded in 1917 the Resurrection Baptist Church has a rich history. It began humbly at 1000 W Poplar Street under Reverend George Cable. The small congregation faced many challenges. They relocated several times. Their journey took them to 16th and Parrish Streets then to 920 N Warnock Street. Reverend Thomas and Reverend Winn served as pastors during this period.
In 1924 Reverend J R Henderson became pastor. He served until 1933. His successor Reverend John J Jenkins led the church to significant growth. This led to the need for larger facilities. The church moved again to 1222 N 11th Street and then to 1211-15 W Girard Avenue. Unfortunately redevelopment forced another move.
After much prayer the church found its current home at 5401 Lansdowne Avenue. They became a chartered church in 1959. Reverend Jenkins sadly passed away in 1966. The church was without a pastor for nearly two years. Then Reverend Claudis L Amaker accepted the invitation to lead. He served diligently for 23 years. His leadership helped the church flourish. He passed away in 2012.
Reverend Barry J Lyons followed. He brought new and innovative ideas to the church. His tenure ended in 1997. Reverend Jerome H Scott Sr then served as pastor until 2007. Finally Reverend Robert J McFadden was installed in 2009. He continues to guide the church. He is a humble and anointed man of God. His leadership is impressive. The church continues to thrive under his guidance. The Resurrection Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. It has been a beacon of hope for the community.
