Construction of the R\u00e9sidence Nord began in 1972. It finished in 1978. It quickly became one of the first projects realized in the North Quarter. This was part of the ambitious Manhattan Plan. Roger Nols was the mayor who greenlit this project. The Antwerp-based company Amelinckx was responsible for its construction. They even used the building as their headquarters until their bankruptcy in 1986.
Rising 82 meters high with 28 floors the R\u00e9sidence Nord is one of Brussels’ tallest residential buildings. It houses 322 apartments and around 750 residents. People of all ages and nationalities call it home. The location and affordable prices attract a diverse community.
Look closely at the base of the R\u00e9sidence Nord. Notice the 13-meter-high base? It was designed as an esplanade. The plan was to connect it to surrounding towers with pedestrian bridges. This is why the current ground-floor entrance feels less grand. The main entrances were meant to be on the esplanade level. The street level was to be reserved for cars. Residents could drive into the building. They could park in garages on the first floor via Rue du Progrès.
The second and third floors, like the ground floor, contain office spaces. From the fifth floor up, the tower splits into two sections. They are named ‘Vooruitgang’ and ‘Gaucheret’. Each section contains 161 apartments. There are three types of apartments: studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.
Originally, there were plans for a R\u00e9sidence Nord II. It was to be built on the adjacent green space. However, the focus shifted to more lucrative office towers. For over 30 years, the land remained empty. It wasn’t until 2011 that smaller residential buildings, a kindergarten, and a small park were built there.
Between 2011 and 2014, the R\u00e9sidence Nord underwent renovations. This ensured that it remains a modern icon in Brussels’ skyline.
