Glimpse back to 1052. This is when the story of the Renwei Temple truly begins. The Renwei Temple stands here as a testament to Guangzhou’s rich history.

Originally built during the Song Dynasty, the Renwei Temple was dedicated to Emperor Zhenwu. He was a powerful Taoist deity. The Renwei Temple started as the North Emperor Temple. Emperor Zhenwu was believed to be in charge of water. That’s why he was also known as the Aquatic Celestial.

Later, the name changed to Renwei Temple. This was because of Emperor Zhenwu’s renowned “Shenwei” or divinity.

Imagine the temple in its early days. It was the largest and most ancient temple in the 18 towns of Bantang Enzhou. Over the centuries, the Renwei Temple has seen many changes. It was refurbished in 1622 during the Ming Dynasty. It was also updated during the Qing Dynasty between 1736 and 1795. Further repairs happened between 1862 and 1874.

Initially, the Renwei Temple had only three quadrangles in its middle and west sections. During the Qing Dynasty, it expanded. Two more rear quadrangles were added on the east side.

Today, the Renwei Temple covers an area of 2,200 square meters. The Renwei Temple stands as a Municipal Historical and Cultural Heritage Protection Unit.

When you visit the Renwei Temple, take a moment to appreciate its history. Think of the emperors and worshippers who walked these grounds before us. Notice the architecture. Imagine the ceremonies that once filled these halls. Feel the spiritual energy that permeates the air.

The Renwei Temple is more than just a building. The Renwei Temple is a living piece of Guangzhou’s past. The Renwei Temple is a place where history and spirituality intertwine. It is open from 8:00 to 17:00 with free entry. Come and experience the Renwei Temple for yourself.
