Think of Renkoji Temple as a sanctuary of peace amid historical whispers. Renkoji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto. It belongs to the Pure Land sect. Chion-in Temple serves as its headquarters.

The main statue enshrined here is Amitabha Tathagata. It is known as “Oiwake Nyorai” and “Komadome Jizo”. Legend says the statue was created by Kaikei. Kaikei was a leading sculptor of the Kamakura period. He made it for a priest in eastern Japan. Captivated by its grace Kaikei wished to keep it. He pursued the priest near Yamashina outside Kyoto. He begged for the statue back.

The priest impressed by Kaikei opened the box. Inside were two identical statues. Overjoyed they parted ways each with a statue. The main statue at Renkoji Temple is one of these. The other resides in Sendai City’s Amidado hall.

Another legend surrounds Komadome Jizo. Kukai the high priest supposedly made it. It was originally placed at Rokujo-gawara execution grounds. Buried due to Kamo River flooding it resurfaced later. Taira-no-Kiyomori’s horse halted at the spot. Digging revealed the Jizo statue. This event gave the statue its name.

Renkoji Temple’s grounds hold another historical layer. The grave of Chosokabe Morichika rests here. He was a military commander in the Battle of Sekigahara. He also played a role in the Siege of Osaka.

Consider the weight of history within these walls. Imagine Kaikei’s dedication. Picture Taira-no-Kiyomori’s startled horse. Visualize Morichika’s final resting place. Renkoji Temple offers not only serenity but also a connection to Kyoto’s intricate past. It invites reflection on faith artistry and the ebb and flow of time.
