Originally known as Glebe High Public School, Renfrew High School stands as a pillar of education in Renfrewshire. Have you heard about it? Today, let’s dive into its story.
Renfrew High School first opened its doors in 1908. It was a different building back then, one that now houses Trinity High School. As the school grew, a new building was needed. So a purpose-built premises was designed close to the initial building. In August 1927, the school officially became Renfrew High School.
Located on Haining Road, Renfrew, the school has a rich history of serving the community. The school is a six-year comprehensive school. It serves the burgh of Renfrew. It sits on the south side of the River Clyde, west of Glasgow.
Renfrew High School’s associated primary schools include Arkleston Primary School, Kirklandneuk Primary School and Newmains Primary School. These schools work together to ensure a smooth transition for students.
In 2016, Renfrew High School faced a setback when a fire broke out on its grounds. Despite the damage, the school persevered. Renfrew High School has a capacity of 1287 students. In the 2022-23 school year, the roll was 841.
A refurbishment project took place between 2008 and 2010. This ensured that the facilities remained modern and conducive to learning.
The school is committed to language education. All learners study French as their second language throughout their broad general education. This aligns with the language taught in the associated primary schools. Spanish is also offered as a third language. Learners can study Spanish in S3 through an elective program. This program includes Introduction to Sign Language and Gaming Design. The Spanish elective focuses on employability. At the end of the elective, learners achieve the SQA Languages for Work Purposes unit at SCQF level 4.
Flexible pathways into the senior phase are available. Students can study for various qualifications in French. These include SQA Languages for Work Purposes units and National 4 and 5. They can also pursue Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications.
Renfrew High School fosters international connections. They organize visits to Paris. They have developed a link with a school in France. Students regularly communicate with their French counterparts via an on-line blog.
A May 2018 inspection report by Education Scotland gave Renfrew High School a glowing review. Inspectors praised the strong leadership of the headteachers. They also noted the positive culture that benefits all young people. The school makes effective use of information about young people’s wellbeing. This ensures that their needs are well met. The inspectors noticed improvements in the proportion of young people achieving a range of Higher passes in S5 and S6.
