From metallic whispers to a tangible presence, the Rencontrer – Ontmoeten Sculpture stands before us. This isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a conversation between metal and sky, between art and observer, crafted by the artistic duo, Guy Rombouts and Monica Droste. The Rencontrer – Ontmoeten, meaning “Meeting” in French and Dutch, reflects the bilingual nature of Brussels. Installed in 1997 along the Koning Albert-II laan, the Rencontrer – Ontmoeten Sculpture occupies a space redesigned by landscape architect Jacques Wirtz between 1995 and 1997. The avenue, initially called Verlengde Emile Jacqmainlaan, was renamed in 1999 after King Albert II following its refurbishment. This striking piece isn’t just a random assembly of metal. It’s a dialogue in shapes. The very forms of the Rencontrer – Ontmoeten Sculpture are based on the “Azart Alphabet,” a unique system developed by Rombouts and Droste. They found the traditional Western alphabet too rigid and created Azart as a more fluid alternative. Each letter in this alphabet corresponds to a word, a shape, a color, and even a sound. Imagine the creativity. Each curve and arch you see here represents not just an artistic choice but a letter, a word, a sound in this unique language. The sculpture’s copper hues shimmer under the Brussels sky, enclosing a central space where a tree grows. It’s managed by the Brussels-Mobility services of the Brussels Capital Region. This artwork isn’t isolated. It shares the median strip with other sculptures, including “Legende,” another creation by Rombouts and Droste. This vibrant avenue, connecting the inner ring road to the Helihavenlaan, acts as a stage for their artistic expressions. The Rencontrer – Ontmoeten Sculpture isn’t merely an object to be admired. It’s an experience to be had, a language to be deciphered, a meeting point between art, nature, and the curious minds that gather here.
