Established in 1947, Remount Baptist Church served a predominantly white community. It had strong ties to military personnel from the nearby Naval base. The Park Circle Community grew significantly thanks to the Navy Shipyard Base during World War II. Remount Baptist Church thrived and its membership exceeded 1000 people. The church experienced significant growth and positively impacted the community.
However, the closure of the Navy Shipyard in 1996 brought change. Economic downturn and families relocating affected the surrounding communities. The area’s demographics shifted and became more diverse. The population became split into thirds of Anglo, Latino and African American residents.
Sadly, Remount Baptist Church struggled to adapt. Membership declined. Closure seemed inevitable. The Charleston Baptist Association intervened. Partner congregations pledged support to revitalize the church. In July 2020, Remount Baptist Church members voted to be replanted. Leaders from local and regional churches formed a team to revitalize Remount Baptist Church.
Today, Remount Baptist Church has been rebranded as Centerpoint Church at Remount. The interior has been modernized with movable seats, a stage and bright lights. The church is committed to serving the community through various ministries. These include parenting courses, refugee support and English as a second language classes.
The Hub at Centerpoint, an affiliated nonprofit, offers affordable meeting spaces. Community leaders can strategize on ways to improve the area. The church welcomes everyone. It mirrors the diversity of the Remount Road community.
The transformation of Remount Baptist Church reflects the revitalization of the Remount Road area. Once struggling, this area is now experiencing new life. The church has invested significantly in renovations. These include addressing asbestos, mold and other infrastructural issues.
Remount Baptist Church actively partners with other organizations. They work together to address community needs such as homelessness. Centerpoint collaborates with Aldersgate United Methodist.
