Did the spire of Rellinger Kirche always have that twist? Here we stand before Rellinger Kirche. It’s a magnificent example of Baroque architecture in Schleswig-Holstein. The church has a rich history, going back to the 9th century. The original structure was a Romanesque fieldstone church, built in the 12th century. This earlier church underwent many changes, including an expansion in 1584. However, the original structure was damaged by a storm in 1648. The magnificent Baroque structure we see today was completed between 1754 and 1756. It was commissioned by Frederick V of Denmark and designed by the renowned architect Cay Dose. Rellinger Kirche stands as a testament to his architectural legacy. The tower itself is a blend of old and new. The base is a remnant of the original Romanesque church. You can still see the granite stones on the northern side. The tower was later encased in brick and given a Baroque roof between 1702 and 1703 by Jacob Bläser. The spire’s distinctive twist is due to weather-induced shifts over time. Inside Rellinger Kirche, light floods the octagonal space through large double windows. Eight robust pillars support the interior. The eastern side features a grand altar wall integrating the pulpit, organ, and altar. The double gallery and seating were originally designed to accommodate up to 2,000 worshippers. The interior is further adorned with late Baroque paintings and rocaille decorations by the Martini brothers, Francesco and Carlo Donato. Rellinger Kirche isn’t just a church. It’s a cultural venue.
