Ever heard of a village that was once home to Vikings? This is Rekkem.

Welcome to Rekkem a unique section of Menen. It’s a place steeped in history and Flemish culture. Before 1977 Rekkem was its own municipality. Its story stretches back centuries.

In 1173 Rekkem was known as Reckeham. This name shares roots with Reclinghem in Artois. It also connects to Rijkegem founded by the Viking Rikiwulf in 876. Imagine Vikings settling here.

Rekkem sits on the border with France and Wallonia. It connects with Menen Lauwe and Mouscron. Neuville-en-Ferrain and Halluin are nearby. Rekkem centre is in the north while Paradijs is in the south.

Rekkem has seen its share of linguistic shifts. A 1947 census showed over a quarter of people used French most often. In 1963 Risquons-Tout a French-speaking area was transferred to Mouscron.

The N366 road crosses Rekkem’s centre. It links Menen and Mouscron. The Dronckaertstraat and A14 motorway pass through. They connect Rekkem centre and Paradijs.

Rekkem boasts cultural significance. It is home to Stichting Ons Erfdeel. This Flemish cultural association has its headquarters here. Jozef Deleu writer and founder of Ons Erfdeel lives in Rekkem.

Don’t miss the Sint-Niklaaskerk the Church of Saint Nicholas. Built in the 12th century it is a classified monument since 1939. Picture this ancient church standing for centuries.

Rekkem a place where languages and cultures meet. Its history as a Viking settlement adds to its charm. Its cultural contributions enrich the region. As we conclude our visit remember Rekkem’s past. It has evolved from Viking roots to a modern village.
