This, my friends, is the Reiterdenkmal, Kaiser Wilhelm I., a monument not just to a man, but to a pivotal moment in German history. The Reiterdenkmal, Kaiser Wilhelm I. isn’t just a statue. It’s a story cast in bronze, a narrative of a newly unified Germany. Inaugurated on October 23, 1898, on the Burgplatz, the Reiterdenkmal, Kaiser Wilhelm I. depicts the emperor in his military regalia, a symbol of his role in the Franco-Prussian War. The statue, designed by Hermann Volz, originally stood on a grand terrace, its base adorned with inscriptions commemorating Wilhelm’s life and accomplishments. One inscription proudly proclaims, “Wilhelm the Great, German Emperor, King of Prussia.” Another shares a poignant reflection from the Emperor’s own diary. “The severe misfortunes that I saw befall the fatherland in my childhood, the early loss of my unforgettable, dear, beloved mother, filled my heart with seriousness from an early age. Participation in the uplifting of the fatherland was the first bright spot for my life.” The creation of the Reiterdenkmal, Kaiser Wilhelm I. was a community effort. Funds were raised primarily through voluntary donations from Essen’s citizens, with industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp among the most generous contributors. The monument also reflects Essen’s own industrial prowess. The victory over France, which led to Wilhelm’s ascension as emperor, was partly attributed to the steel cannons produced in Essen by Krupp’s factory. These cannons boasted twice the range of their French counterparts. The Reiterdenkmal, Kaiser Wilhelm I. has witnessed significant changes to its surroundings. In 1928, as part of a city redesign, the monument was moved to its current location. The original grand terrace was replaced with a simpler base, and the bronze lion that once graced the statue’s base was sadly melted down for the war effort in 1940.
