This playground isn’t just a place for swings and slides. It’s a testament to community spirit. It honors Andrew J Reiff a local activist. For over 30 years he fought for his neighborhood Maspeth. He led the charge against unwanted development. He championed green spaces. He wanted a better life for the children. Reiff Playground owes its existence to him.
Maspeth itself has a rich history. It’s Queens’ oldest organized settlement. In 1642 Reverend Francis Doughty led a group there. The name Maspeth comes from the Mespaechtes tribe. It means “bad water place” or “scattered settlement”. A Native American attack devastated the settlement. Settlers returned in 1652. They established the village of Middleburgh.
This area hasn’t always been a park. In the 20th century residents battled for green spaces. Industrial and commercial interests dominated. When the city acquired this land in 1944 hopes soared. A recreational facility was envisioned. A long and intense struggle followed.
The community wanted a park. They needed playing fields for children. They faced opposition. The Board of Education wanted to build a new intermediate school. This became a huge political fight. Newspapers across the city reported on the conflict. The Board argued it would improve ethnic distribution of students. Maspeth residents pushed back. They did not want more people in their neighborhood. They wanted a high school not an intermediate school to ease overcrowding at Grover Cleveland High School.
Through Reiff’s determined leadership they triumphed. The land became a park in 1964. The City Council named it Andrew J Reiff Memorial Playground in 1969. Reiff Playground is a victory for community action.
Today Reiff Playground offers baseball fields. There is adventure play equipment and handball courts. The spray shower is a popular feature. The playground has undergone renovations. These improvements include new asphalt safety surfacing and new handball courts. The park is a vibrant community hub. Children and adults alike enjoy its facilities. Their laughter echoes through the years. It stands as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of green spaces. It’s more than just a playground. It’s a legacy.
